Animal Origami Creatures Are Popular Choices

By Sylvia Adolvana

The art of origami incorporates and transforms many real world objects into paper replicas, such as origami flowers. However, the animal kingdom has inspired a whole host of fascinating representations.

Traditionally, in Japan, the crane is the most popular animal depicted through the use of origami. There is folklore surrounding this bird, wherein the person who folds one thousand cranes will receive prosperity and good fortune, and the granting of a wish as well.

Cranes are not the only animal origami creatures that can be recreated through folds, as cats, dogs, fish and many other animals are also popular choices.

Using The Bird Base To Create Different Birds And Dragons

The bird base is used in conjunction with other animal origami bases to create a wide variety of winged creatures. Of all the birds created with origami, the crane is probably the most well known.

However, bluebirds and even dragons are popular figures that can be made using the bird base. Although it is called the bird base, it does not mean that only origami birds can be created from it, as other animals as well as decorative figures and gifts use the bird base as a starting point.

Creating A Dog

Here's how to make a dog using this Japanese art form. First, you will begin with a square piece of paper. If it is colored, put the colored side face down on the work surface and then fold along the diagonal to create a triangle.

Next you will bring the corners together to section the paper in half and then unfold. This step creates a crease. Now you will place the model so that two points are at the top and one point is facing down. To create the dog's ears, you will turn down each of the two top points, using the center crease line as a guide.

Finally, you will fold the top and bottom of the dog's head away from you. The dog is complete. This is a very basic origami diagram. Many kids who make this enjoy pasting google eyes on it as well as drawing a nose and a mouth to make it more realistic and personalized. There are a few thoughts to review your options and keep in mind while you are learning how to construct animal origami pieces, if you want to make the process run more smoothly. First, make use of crisp paper that will allow you to make the kinds of creases required.

Do not use any old piece of paper, but at the same time, don't buy really expensive paper to begin as you may be wasting a lot of it. As well, choose paper that is colored differently on each side, so that you are immediately aware of which side is the front and which side is the back.

What is origami?
Origami is a traditional Japanese art of paper folding. More often than not, it is used to create models by means of geometric folds and crease patterns. A common goal is to utilize a single piece of paper, without the need for gluing or cutting.

Models can also utilize multiple pieces, each formed from one sheet of paper, to form a modular assembly. In these cases, units are assembled without thread or glue to create complex pieces.
