Art Museum Collections In America

By Sylvia Adolvana

In many cases, people have the desire to view firsthand some of the marvelous art works created by master artists. Often, their first thought is to travel to Europe to wander the exhibition halls of the great museums there.

There is no arguing that there are valid reasons to think first of European museums because of the countless works of masters that are part of their collections. At the same time, there are also many art museum collections that people can also get great enjoyment from here in the US as well.

Many Impressive Art Collections In America

The fact is that many art museums in America also boast impressive collections of fine and treasured works of artistic expression. While the reputation that European museums enjoy is certainly justified, it should not eclipse the fact that there are many art collections featured in art museums across the US that are well worth the time to visit, especially if a trip "across the pond" is out of the question.

Most curators, who are charged with managing an art museum in a US city, know that they can’t go "head-to-head" with the major museums of Europe and hope to truly compete. However, these same curators usually have other assets which they can put into play to help their gallery exhibitions stand out. This means putting the most recent technology to work in their presentations.

Better Displays With A Careful Selection Of Art

On top of that, there are many who claim that the best of the US collections are found in some of the finest museums to be found anywhere. Rather than relying on centuries of collected masterpieces that can almost crowd each other out, as seen at some of the European museums, a museum of art in the United States is able to create better displays with fewer, more carefully selected pieces, so that the viewer is not overwhelmed.

In addition to that, some experts say that people prefer to find new and interesting art exhibits each time they visit an art museum. The smaller US museums are more likely to rotate their gallery exhibitions, providing variety and encouraging people to return often to see the attractions that have been added.

Well Known Masterpieces Are Always On Display

In many cases, the curators of the European art museums feel they must leave the well-known masterpieces so that those who cannot visit the museum frequently have an opportunity to see the "celebrity" works of art, such as the Mona Lisa.

American art museums also differ from the European art museums in terms of their commitment to being on the cutting edge of the global contemporary art community. While not always the case, the more traditional of the European art galleries and museums also tend to feature the more traditional, classic and well-known artists and are generally slower to reach out to acquire works of art that are outside of that traditional style and genre.

The Buildings Are Works Of Art

One of the things that many people appreciate about many of the art museum facilities throughout the USA is that often the collections of art are housed in buildings which are considered to be works of art as well.

These buildings that have gained renown for their architecture, as much as for the gallery exhibitions they hold, can even be considered a reflection of the desire of American museums to be pioneers in the area of art appreciation.
