Become A Model - A New Beginning To A Modeling Career

By Judd Walker

Become a model and the world is your oyster. Travel all over the world and smile when required. Too easy!

If it was that easy why doesn’t everyone want to become a model?

Maybe because everyone doesn’t like the 5am makeup call, the long hours, the clothes changes and so far away from your friends. It is not a nine to five job. You can’t just go to a bar and have a drink with your friends when you have a 5am start.

You need to be disciplined and control your weight.

Many young women dream of walking the catwalks in Paris and Milan and of seeing themselves on the cover of high fashion magazines.

Although it might seem like the way to become a model is to try out for one of the reality television shows that offer a modeling contract as a prize, there are other ways to go about it. Knowing what’s involved in a career in modeling is the first step.

Misconception

A very common misconception is that a young woman has to be rail thin and very tall to make it in modeling.

Although most of the supermodels do in fact fit this physical type, there is a need for women and men of all shapes and sizes in this field. Determining what type of work you want to do is important when you decide to become a model.

There is a constant need for plus size models, child models as well as modeling for petite women.

Body part modeling

One area that few people consider when they are thinking of this career path is body part modeling. This is exactly as it sounds; individuals are often needed to become a model for hand cream commercials or bath products.

In these instances only certain parts of their bodies are required. For someone with beautiful hands, feet or legs they can become a model that is very specialized.

It’s not surprising that some of the world’s top models in these specialized fields make a very good living and are constantly in demand.

Modeling Agents

So, how does a person get started in this lucrative career choice? In most major cities you’ll often hear of modeling agents holding open auditions. Parents in particular need to be aware of what the majority of these opportunities entail.

Most of them are nothing more than marketing ploys aimed at young women and men who want to become a model. They’ll ask for contact information and then in the weeks following the event, the aspiring models will be given the chance to attend modeling classes.

These classes are billed as being fundamental in helping young people who want to become a model. However they are often very costly and essentially offer the promise of nothing in return.

Have a portfolio of professional images

A better approach is if you are interested in pursuing this career to have several professional photographs taken and set up a model portfolio to show modeling agencies. Make sure to include details of any modeling experience and show images of yourself doing modeling work. This information will boost the chances of getting new modeling work.

Then you can take the model portfolio and visit established and reputable modeling agencies to see if there are any available opportunities for someone like you.

A lot of the modeling agencies have websites, so that you can apply online and upload your portfolio images for their consideration.

As with any career choice, when a young person wants to become a model, you need to be prepared to work hard and keep persevering.

To become a model you require a lot of determination and a thick skin, because you may need to be prepared for rejection.

But once you get one model assignment, then you can use the experience to get another.
