Binoculars View Everything

By Cedric B Georges

Necessity is the mother of invention. That has been true for thousands of years. If a person needs to see something in the distance and comes up with a way to do so without moving farther towards the object, then an optical system has been employed.

These optical systems, such as binoculars, are used by many different types of people, from military personnel to outdoor enthusiasts. Binoculars for recreational and occupational use have brought about many new inventions within the optical field, and no doubt, as more people pick up a set, a future generation of outstanding products will be developed.

Binoculars Provide A Sense Of Depth Perception

Binoculars are made by linking two identical telescopes, mounted side by side, and aligning them to point in the same direction. In so doing, the viewer is presented with a sense of depth perception, as opposed to a monocular telescope, which provides an image with no depth.

Earlier designs relied upon a convex and concave lens pair. While effective for low magnification, higher levels of magnification were unavailable. Newer designs rely upon prisms to manipulate the image, allowing lighter, powerful and more compact binoculars to be constructed. Additionally, modern optical coatings can improve image brightness, color and contrast.

Magnification, Objective Diameter And Field Of View

Depending on the intended use, different optical components create different optical parameters. Among those parameters are: magnification, objective diameter and field of view. Magnification defines the magnifying power. The objective diameter is the measurement of the objective lens, usually in millimeters, determining how much light can be gathered to form an image.

The field of view specifies how wide an area can be viewed at a given range, and is commonly done by using the magnification times the objective diameter. For example: 10x50 would define a 10x magnification with a 50mm objective lens. Often these parameters are listed near the eyepiece.

A Large Range Of Binoculars

From high powered, platform mounted systems, to hand held opera glasses, binoculars come in a variety of configurations to meet virtually any need or price point. Marine binoculars, with water resistant coatings and large objective lenses are found on most ships at sea.

A 7x to 12x magnification, with 30 to 50 mm objective lenses are predominant for outdoor use. Amateur astronomers are concerned with the ratio of magnification to objective size, so a lower magnification will provide a larger field of view, providing improved images of larger objects. Sets specially designed for astronomy will have high magnifications and large (70 - 80mm) objectives.

Be warned however, that the more specialized they are, the higher the price will be.

More Binoculars Facts....

If you are looking for a way to get your family outdoors and get them interested in bird watching or viewing other animals in their natural habitat, binoculars are the way to go about this.

These optical devices are lenses that magnify the image so that you can see objects far away without the danger of getting close and putting yourself or the animal in danger. Some of these are not cheap and can run into hundreds of dollars depending on the brand and where you purchase them but you can still find great deals if you know where to look.

It is a time to enjoy the blossoming life and see all that there is to see with the new born animals and older animals venturing out. The best way to observe these creatures is through the telescopic lenses of binoculars. You can find a pair of these miraculous wonders in many sporting good stores and online.

Any sporting enthusiast or bird watcher can attest that there is one piece of equipment that is absolutely essential and that is a binocular. Binoculars are optical devices used to look at objects far away.

They are not as powerful as a telescope but they do the job pretty effectively. They allow the sporting and bird watching enthusiast to get an up close view of animals without putting themselves or the animal in danger.
