Celebrity Baby Photos Published In Magazines
By Jane Lovell
When Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were expecting the
birth of Shiloh Novelle Jolie-Pitt, the press dubbed
the birth "the most anticipated since Jesus."
Consequently, the price of the coveted first newborn
baby photos soared heavenward.
Media outlets are willing to dish out big dollars for
cute and funny baby photos from the stars, but how ethical
is this practice? In this article, we’ll reveal the
highest price tag for celebrity baby photos and address
the controversy surrounding it.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie probably have the most
photographed children in the world and the couple use
the money made to benefit their favorite causes. Newborn
baby photos of their twins were sold for an unbelievable
$14 million, making them the most expensive celebrity
baby pictures ever.
Celebrity Baby Photos SOld To Help Children In Need
Pictures of their first biological child sold for $4.1
million while pictures of their adopted son, Pax Thien,
went for $2 million. As famous for philanthropy as they
are for their films, Pitt and Jolie insist that the
celebrity baby photos are sold solely to help children
in need.
It may seem like everyone is scrambling for a glimpse
of celebrities’ newborn photo announcements and professional
baby photos, but in fact there are some people who are
offended by the concept. In his blog, CNN’s Anderson
Cooper called the practice of selling celebrity baby
pictures "unethical" because babies cannot
give consent to have their image used for profit.
Ethical Issues And Expressing Discontent
A strong argument; since celebrities often sue when
their image is used without permission. Cooper urges
people who disapprove of celebrity photos to boycott
the magazines who sell them and to email both the publication
and the celebrities with respectful letters expressing
their discontent.
While some celebrity parents choose to have their children
photographed in controlled environments, others prefer
to keep their kids out of the public eye altogether.
To the paparazzi, it’s like dangling a steak in front
of a hungry dog.
Legal Action Has Been Taken By Celebrities
Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was caught on camera breast
feeding her baby, Reese Witherspoon filed charges against
an aggressive photographer trying to take pictures of
her two small children at Disneyland, and Oscar winner
Halle Berry filed a criminal complaint against a photographer
who allegedly took invasive pictures of her and her
baby in the backyard of the family’s home.
This has raised serious concerns about the conduct
of photojournalists and the potential threat they pose
to celebrity babies and their parents. Celebrity baby
photos are here to stay. While Brangelina hold the record
for valuable pics, the second-most lucrative photo sale
goes to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. They sold exclusive
first shots of their twins to People magazine $6 million.
As celebrity weeklies are forced to compete with a
growing number of entertainment shows and tabloid-style
blogs, the price tags associated with these types of
private moments have skyrocketed. And entrepreneurial
celebrities stepping in to maintain control of, and
profit from their exposure, only fuels things further.
