Contemporary Art Auction Photography Shack Guide
Contemporary Art Auction With Online Preview Of Art
By Jane Lovell
Contemporary art is punchy and compelling. It’s often
brightly colored and abstract. It’s anything from the
past forty years that subtly whispers "I, as a
buyer, support living artists" or "I, as a
buyer, enjoy thought-provoking artwork."
It’s rare to find someone who’s never heard of Andy
Warhol or Salvador Dali, but there are many smaller
name artists who are finding eager contemporary art
auction audiences clamoring to buy original art.
The top 10 contemporary artists, whose works sold for
over $5 million at auction, are as follows: Lucian Freud,
Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Brice Marden, Bruce Nauman,
Robert Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra,
Frank Stella, and Cy Twombly.
A Long Waiting List
Other artists (in the $1 - $4 million range) to look
out for include: Chuck Close, David Hockney, Ellsworth
Kelly, Anselm Kiefer, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Ryman,
and Wayne Thiebaud.
Jasper Johns, one of the highest paid modern artists,
can’t seem to keep up with the demand. He paints two
projects each month (which will sell for no less than
$1 million), but the waiting list is still long.
Colorful Paintings With American Themes
Entertainment giant David Geffen paid $40 million for
"Gray Numbers" a few years back and New York
City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art allegedly paid over
$20 million for "White Flag."
John’s colorful paintings touch upon Americana themes
-- with lots of flags, maps and targets - with subtle
messages that affect every onlooker differently. If
a collector is fortunate enough to find a Jasper Johns
in an art auction house, then there’s no telling how
much it’ll sell for.
Most Of The Buyers Are European
One can’t help but wonder about what accounts for the
noticeable trend towards modern art? Most of the buyers
(42%) at the Sotheby’s contemporary art auction continue
to be Europeans, with the US trailing at 19%, and Asia
/ Middle Eastern sales at 12%.
It seems that the high price of the pound is hurting
many Americans more than the credit crunch, but London’s
weekend auctions saw many advances from interested Indian
and Chinese buyers looking for a piece of cultural heritage.
Chinese And Indian Art
For instance, two bidders fought over Yue Minjun’s
"Execution" for six minutes, which finally
sold for a record breaking $2.93 million. Likewise,
one of Putu Sutawijaya’s paintings ("Silent Road")
sold for $350,000 (11 times its estimated price) at
the Borobudur Auction!
Art hunters can find their art investment and treasures
at the Frieze Art Fair in London, one of Sotheby’s or
Christie’s widely acclaimed annual events, or even at
an art auction online.
Browse Online Before Attending An Auction
All it takes is a credit card and a discerning eye
to capture that perfect sculpture, watercolor art or
oil painting for sale. Browse online before attending
an auction to get an idea of what to look for.
Whether the stakes are high, as with an Andy Warhol
and a Brice Marden, or hovering around $200 for a smaller
unknown artist, the contemporary art auction is an enjoyable
way to explore one’s interest and review your
options in art and meet others who share the same passion.

More Art Auctions Facts....
What are some of the best auctions to try?
Before that question can be answered
you must first decide how much money you are wishing
to spend. Art work, be it paintings, pottery, glass
or jeweled coat racks, can range dramatically in price.
Do you want a one of a kind painting from a world famous
artist?
Are you interested in digital
photography? What era of pottery and figurines interests
you? After you have narrowed the field down, you can
then decide on what art auction best suits your needs.
The internet can be both a blessing and a curse.
If you want to physically touch
the art work or inspect it, the internet is not going
to allow you to do that. But if you wanted to search
among the best art auctions found throughout the world
it is a great place to start.
One website, in particular, lists
both physical art auctions and those found solely online.
Go to www.art-auctions.com
