Design Schools Help Improve Your Skills

By Judd Walker

When you think of design schools, what tends to come to mind? Well, first of all, this sort of school is an institution you attend after you’ve finished your public education. So it’s a post-secondary institution, standing alongside university as a way to get an academic degree or certification.

You can attend a school that’s devoted entirely to fashion, or in many cases, you can go to a regular university that offers a fashion design degree as one of your possibilities. Yet instead of attending a regular high school, you could go to one particularly special high school in New York.

That’s right, among the many sorts of schools for design, the High School of Fashion Industries in New York City gets budding designers to review their options and start much earlier than any other institution.

Get A Head Start In Entering Fashion Design Schools

It begins right in Grade 9, in fact, teaching such subjects as history of fashion, pattern making, draping and so on. Students can focus on men’s, women’s or children’s wear, and get a great head start for entering schools of fashion design after they are finished high school.

Indeed, it’s possible they might even get some credit for courses in those institutions, and graduate sooner with a degree.

A Trade School For Fashion Designers

Think of the High School of Fashion Industries as a trade school, similar to those that concentrate on construction or other trades. So while most of its students are hoping for fashion design careers, it still teaches academics as well, as many trade schools do.

This high school’s program has a strong emphasis on subjects like mathematics, science, literature and social studies, etc. The main difference is that many of its students are already planning to apply to design schools after graduation, and this academy prepares them to do so.

A Dream High School

This high school really gives students the best of both worlds. If they are seriously interested in attending one of the design schools after they graduate, then they’ve already got a leg up, and if they do well here, they’re sure to be accepted at one of those institutions.

Yet even if they decide, after all, that they don’t want to go into a career in fashion, they are still very knowledgeable about the industry. With this school’s parallel emphasis on academics, they are very well prepared to go a different route. This sounds like the dream high school for anyone interested in the fashion world.

More Fashion Schools Facts....

The average person can name at least one or two major fashion designers or fashion houses. It is because people see their work hanging on department store racks every single day or see them on television. Not every designer has gone through fashion school.

Some started as mere apprentices and worked their way up in the business. It is something you need to think about. Having a degree in fashion does not automatically gain you access to fame and fortune. Most often it takes business skill and a drive to succeed.
