Digital Photography And Mastering The Basics

By Philomena Stevenson

Digital photography allows you to look at the image you have created, instantly. You do not have to wait for the film to be developed and then look at the printed image, to see if you have the image you want.

You can edit and adjust your images with digital editing software. There is usually an editing software package included with your camera, when you purchase a new digital camera. Once you install the software on your computer, you can save your images on your computer and start editing.

The Basics Of Digital Photography

Digital photography does not always require the most expensive SLR camera. Great photographs are possible with a point-and-shoot digital camera as long as you know the basic techniques.

For starters, you should know the functions and features of your camera by heart in digital photography. Be familiar with its different shooting modes, the memory capacity and everything else that it can and cannot do. You can read the manual as thoroughly as possible, review your options and then take as many photographs as you can, experimenting on all the features in the process.

Controlling Your Flash

Among the basic pointers you should know is learning to control the flash. You do not want to use this for every photo opportunity, but save it for conditions with low-light.

With flash, you want to avoid using flash directly above the lens when shooting portraits, as you want to avoid the dreaded red eye. If you can remove the flash, or turn off the flash and move the model to a lighter area, where you may not need flash, then you do not need to worry about the red eye effect. If you accidentally get red eyes on the people in your images, you can always edit them out with image editing software on your computer.

Using A Tripod To Avoid Camera Shake

Digital photography allows you to either hold the camera level or mount it on a tripod depending on the setting. Most digital cameras need to be small so that they can be portable, but this also makes it more difficult to hold it steady.

A tripod is especially useful if you are trying to take photographs of subjects that are moving very quickly or panorama shots. When pressing the shutter, do it gently and hold it for at least one second. The first click is usually for making the camera focus and the second click will take the actual picture.

Shutter Lag On Digital Cameras

Most digital cameras suffer from shutter lag and this poses a challenge when the subject has already moved from the initial position. If possible, you will have to ask your subject to hold the pose as long as he or she can.

One of the advantages of digital photography is that you can take as many pictures as your memory card permits. You never have to worry about wasting film or the cost of developing pictures since you can simply delete those photographs that you do not need.

Adjusting Your Images With Photo Editing Software

If there are minor imperfections or adjustments that need to be made in digital photography, you can actually use photo editing software to change colors, lighting and other details. With digital photographs, there is a lot more leeway for you to practice and make mistakes while learning the ins and outs of digital photography.

There is often editing software including in your package, when you purchase a digital camera. In recent years a more common software is Adobe Photoshop Elements. This is a cut down version of Adobe Photoshop. Once you learn the basics of editing and adjusting your images with Photoshop Elements, you may want to purchase Adobe Photoshop and do almost any type of editing, adjusting and adding to your images.

Professional Photographers Use Adobe Photoshop

You may want the ability to select a larger range of special effects to add to your images, automate your activities with Actions and more. All these procedures can be done with the full version of Adobe Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop is used by a large number of professional photographers, so you will be editing just like digital photography professionals edit their images.
