Digital Photography Essentials To Create Better Digital Images

By Jane Lovell

If you are getting into digital photography, there are a few essential equipment you need to buy. These digital photography essentials may vary slightly, depending on the type of digital camera you decide to purchase, but everyone needs the same essential equipment.

Keep in mind, while the start-up costs of digital photography can be high, the ongoing costs can be minimal, depending on how many images you need to print and other expenses you may need, if you wish to take photography seriously.

A Good Quality Digital Camera

One of the digital photography essentials, you need is a good quality digital camera. For tips on what to buy, you can review your options and turn to many different sources online, like user review sites or simply enter your local camera store.

You can also look at joining a photography club, to learn new skills and share ideas on cameras and other digital photography equipment.

When you are considering your costs, make sure you factor in the cost of other equipment you’ll need, including camera accessories and other photography equipment.

Storing Your Images With Flash Memory Cards

Flash memory cards are the things that actually save your images. Just like storing images on film, with the old film cameras, now everything is stored on a flash memory card on your camera.

The advantage of cards, is that you can transfer images to a computer, and erase them and then use the card again. You can even delete photos on the go.

A lot of people assume that means they can get a small memory card because they will use it again, but remember that if you are traveling or just thinking about taking a lot of images, you need a larger capacity card.

Alternatively, you may use a number of cards and then transfer the images to your computer, once you arrive home.

Photo Editing Software Bundled With Your New Digital Camera

When you purchase a new digital camera, there is usually photo editing software bundled on a CD. You can make enquiries on the type of software included with your camera bundle, at the time of purchase.

If you a buy a digital camera without software, then you can download, one of many photo editing software options available online.

Some image editing software is available as a tryout, others are shareware, some are completely free, while others have a nominal fee, while the professional standard software can be expensive.

Adobe Photoshop Elements For Budding Photographers

For example, Photoshop Elements is a popular software option for budding photographers. There is a fee for this product, but it is much cheaper than the full version of Adobe Photoshop, used by many professional photographers.

You may realise by now, some image editing software is for advanced digital photography, some is for casual photography. If nothing else, you will want software that will let you edit, easily crop, compress and color adjust your images.

Keep Your Lens Clean With A Lens Cleaner And A Cap

A digital camera can be expensive to maintain. It has a beautiful image sensor, a lens and a fast shutter speed range. You need to keep your lens clean with a lens cleaner and a cap, but with a point and shoot digital camera, many of these options are not practical because the lens is so small. A good product to look at, is known as a Lenspen, which can help clean a smaller lens.

Backing Up Your Images On CDs, DVDs, Hard Drives And Online Backup Services

There are many back up options to store your precious images including CDs, DVDs and hard rives. You should use all these options to store your images, as computer hard drives can get viruses and destroy all your data.

You will need a CD or DVD or an external hard drive that will let you back up mass quantities of your images. Another option is to store your images with a secure online back up service.

Many hosting services, offer secure backup services. If you have a website, you should enquire if your web hosting service has a back up service to store your images.

These are some of the many digital photography essentials.
