Digital Photography Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

By Jane Lovell

Digital photography mistakes are everywhere. For example, you can see people using their flash cameras in stadiums and rock concerts, when the subject of the image may be more than a hundred feet away. Depending on the strength of your flash, flash is only effective within an approximately 12 foot radius.

You can take better images by making the effort to stop making the most common digital photography mistakes.

Capture The Image By Pushing The Button All The Way Down

Some people do not understand about how to take an image with a digital camera. When taking an image with an autofocus camera, you need to press the button halfway down, in order to focus the image, and then all the way down to capture the image.

This is one of the reasons why images are not captured, as the button is not pushed all the way down.

Controlling The Flash On Your Camera

If you have an auto everything digital camera and you cannot control the flash, then there may be errors in the way the flash comes on. For example, if you are taking an image at a concert or a sports stadium, a flash may be ineffective, as the sports team is too far away.

Most flash systems are only effective over a radius of around twelve feet, so shooting a picture of a sports team a hundred feet away will result in a terrible photo.

If you have a camera where you can control the flash, with a number of flash options, then you can review your options and control the amount of flash reaching the subject and when the flash turns on.

If you are taking a picture where the subject is too far away, then your better option is to switch off the flash and take a long exposure or get closer to the subject.

Understanding The Effect Of Megapixels And Compression

Many small compact digital cameras do not give you the option of image size and another option for compression. Many other cameras, still give you these options, especially the larger DSLR cameras.

If you want to work on your images with photo editing software on your computer, then you need higher quality images with lots of pixels and almost no compression, as you need as much detail in the image, in order to edit the images most effectively.

Switch Off The Digital Zoom

Digital zoom limits your cropping options. When you are taking an image, try and include as much detail as possible, in order to give you a wide range of options when you are cropping the image on your computer. If the image is already cropped with your digital zoom when you are capturing the image, then you have less options to improve the image with your image editing software.

If the option of turning on and off your digital zoom is available on your digital camera, your better option is to switch it off.

Always Back Up Your Images Using A Number Of Options

Always save your images using a number of back up options. One option is to save them on a separate hard drive on your computer. Another option is to save them to DVDs. A third option is to use an online back up facility. Using all three options, helps to protect you against losing any of your precious images.

Taking advantage of all these tips will help you avoid the most common digital photography mistakes.
