Edit Pictures Is Easy With The Right Image Editing Software

By Nikos L Maxwell

Edit pictures is the easy part these days. Cutting out bits of the image you don't like, fixing up dark patches, adding text, fixing the red eye in portraits are just some of the basic image editing you can do.

You need good reliable editing software that will perform these edits and manipulation on your computer. Especially when a lot of images are taken with your digital camera.

I take a lot of pictures, and now that I have a digital camera, I take more than I have ever taken before. Though this means more pictures, it also means that I have to spend more time when I want to edit my pictures.

Quite often I will have a good shot but it needs a little help, and by the time I go through over a hundred pictures from one concert or event, I am dog tired.

Removing Red Eye

One big problem I have is red eye. Though my camera has a setting to help reduce red eye, it doesn’t work well. When I have it set to red eye it takes a long time for the camera to snap the picture.

This means that whatever shot I was trying to take is long gone by the time the shutter snaps. I can’t use it. This then means I have to edit pictures to get rid of the red eye.

If I am really close to the subjects at a concert, this might mean I have to do this to all of the pictures. Thankfully I have a good program to help me edit pictures or it might take me months to get it done.

Edit for framing

There are also many times when I need to edit pictures for framing reasons.

When you are taking quick shots at a concert, the subjects move a lot, and sometimes it is better to take a wider shot and then edit pictures down to the size you want. My digital camera will take very large pictures.

This means when I edit pictures, I can crop off a lot of extra space and the ensuing picture will still be sharp and in focus. I have found a lot of great pictures this way. Had the shot been done in film it would not have turned out so well.

Editing Software

If you want to edit pictures, you just have to find the right software. Some operating systems come with free software to help you edit pictures but with heavy restrictions in the editing and manipulation capabilities.

If you don’t like the software you got with your computer you can go out and buy an upgrade or buy new image editing software. A lot of good editing software is included with a new digital cameras or scanners.

Adobe Photoshop Elements

For example I started using Adobe Photoshop Elements when it was included with my digital camera. It does all the basic editing that I require including zooming and taking out pieces of the images to keep it all sharp. I can take out the red eye, add text and fix the contrast.

I have now gone to the professional level and use the full version of Photoshop for all my editing as it includes a lot of manipulation and special effects that I want to add to my images. It is so much easier to edit and manipulate pictures in Photoshop than some of the other photo editing programs I have tried.

There are times when I want to perform the same edits on a number of images, so I use the Actions on Photoshop to automate the process, and its all done so quickly and efficiently that it allows me time to do other tasks.

Another efficiency gain in Photoshop is to create a Photographic Gallery. You just place a number of images in a folder and fill in the blanks with names and Photoshop creates an image gallery with named images.

A simply brilliant time saver.
