Fashion Design And Better Merchandising Skills
By Judd Walker
Even if you aren’t sure you have the skills or inclination
to study fashion design, yet you’re very keen on the
industry, you might review your options and consider
entering that industry with a different emphasis.
Remember, that even famous designers need someone to
promote their masterpieces, choose markets, design sales
campaigns, and so on. After all, when the last model
has walked down the runway in a big show, the designer
is not likely the primary person doing the marketing.
The business side of the fashion world is as important
as the creative side if designers are ultimately to
be successful. So how about working in fashion merchandising
instead?
Merchandising Is An Essential Element Of Your Success
Many fashion design institutions have changed from
just teaching things like textiles, patterning, the
history of fashion, and so on, and now offer courses
in merchandising as well, recognizing that it’s just
as crucial a discipline.
The very names of the schools, in fact, often indicate
just how seriously they take this side of the business.
The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in
Los Angeles is one of those, as is The Institute of
Fashion Design and Marketing in Florence, Italy. Fashion
programs are frequently partnered with business programs
in design schools.
Negotiations And Back Stage Intrigue
Remember that going into the merchandising side of
a fashion career doesn’t mean that you’re going to lose
your chance to experience the glamour and excitement
of the big shows and the runways. Far from it.
You could well be more involved in negotiations and
back stage intrigue than the designers themselves. You’ll
still need a good eye for fashion, to understand where
the trends are going, and to know about the history
of social styles and culture.
You’ll have taken many of the same courses as students
who were strictly studying fashion design, but you’ll
have added certain skills that will put you even more
in the thick of things.
Increasing Your Skills To Further Your Career
It could be that the best fashion program for you will
be one that emphasizes the merchandising side more than
the design side. But you may end up exercising your
public relations and promotional skills with just as
much creativity as any student who studied primarily
the fashion design side of the curriculum.
You could work hand in hand with a designer, and with
your studies in predicting trends, working with people,
choosing styles and marketing, you could have a career
as a publicist, fashion coordinator, marketer, futurist
and even psychologist, all rolled into one.

More Fashion Schools Facts....
The average person can name at least one or two major
fashion designers or fashion houses. It is because people
see their work hanging on department store racks every
single day or see them on television. Not every designer
has gone through fashion school.
Some started as mere apprentices and worked their way
up in the business. It is something you need to think
about. Having a degree in fashion does not automatically
gain you access to fame and fortune. Most often it takes
business skill and a drive to succeed.
