Fashion Designing Online Courses

By Judd Walker

As you research how to get into fashion designing, you might be surprised to discover that you may not need to go the traditional and much more expensive route of attending one of the big design schools.

As the internet has expanded into every other area of learning, it has now also infiltrated this one as well. If you’re hoping to acquire a fashion design degree, you can in fact do so through online study.

You may think such a thing is impossible, given that so much of this art involves hands-on work with fabric, models, draping, and so on. It might seem that the idea of getting this degree online is completely off the wall.

Learning Theory And More Technical Subjects Online

However, remember that fashion designing doesn’t only involve that physical work with fabric and clothing. In fact, most of what you’d be learning in fashion programs even at the big schools would be theory, history, and some more technical subjects.

It isn’t strictly necessary that you need to be on campus to review your options and learn about fashion history, how to spot trends, materials and textiles, or the business side of the fashion world.

Learn Pattern Making And Graphic Design On Your Computer

Many elements of a fashion degree, like learning the pattern making, graphic design, and other digital arts are now usually learned through the computer. So if you are disciplined enough to complete the reading and online assignments, you can cover a great deal of this material without being on-site.

Another side of the fashion industry that lends itself to online study is the business and merchandising aspect of things. Fashion designing is just one part of the industry, and the business side is much more theoretical and obviously, much less hands-on.

Merchandising And Marketing Principles

Many fashion programs make a distinction between the two, in fact. The types of things you’d need to learn for a merchandising degree, such as marketing principles and methods, could easily be studied through online courses.

Thus far, even clever web designers haven’t found any way to accomplish the hands-on work through the internet. So that element of your fashion designing course would still need to be arranged, probably through an internship at a local design studio or a few weeks on campus at a fashion design school somewhere.

Online Option Helps To Reduce Costs

Then there’s the question of expensive sewing equipment, which you’d probably have to supply yourself. But you might already have such equipment if you’re planning to be a designer anyway, and the online option may still be less expensive than full-time attendance at a school.

So don’t knock this option until you’ve looked at it more closely. It could be the type of course that’s right for you.

Maybe if you are lucky and work hard enough it will be your name people are screaming about and willing to pay thousands of dollars for just to own a piece of your apparel.
