Framing Art With A Matching Design
By George Goodall Jnr
Choosing the right frame and mat for your artwork is
almost as important as the art itself. Framing art can
greatly enhance the overall look of the piece as well
as complement your decor.
Of course, there are other reasons why framing your
art is a good idea, one being that it helps to prevent
dirt and dust from settling on the art and preserves
the life of the piece. The frame and protective glass
have the job of isolating and showcasing the photographic
work, print or watercolor.
Protecting Your Posters And Reproduced Prints
It is also very important to be sure that your posters
and reproduced prints are not simply taped onto a wall
without the benefit of a mat board and frame, as the
edges will likely start to tear and the colors may fade
faster.
A frame also dresses up a regular poster, allowing
you to coordinate it so that it will look great with
almost any type of decorating theme in your home. Depending
upon your picture framing supplies and your level of
skill you may be able to create a unique custom picture
frame that is also a great idea for a gift to someone
special.
Choose A Different Colour Frame To Contrast With The
Colour Of The Wall
When framing art try to avoid choosing a frame that
is close to the same color or tone of the wall where
it will be hung. For example, if you have a white wall,
you may want to stay away from white or light pastel
colored frames.
Find a frame color that will contrast with the color
of the wall, so on a pastel colored wall you may want
to choose a darker frame color, and if need be, you
can choose a mat board that is closer to the wall color
to bring the look together.
Frame Complements The Art
Of course, you also want to be sure not to choose a
frame that will take attention away from the artwork
itself. The art is the focal point so you do not want
to choose a bright silver picture frame for a simple
muted piece of art.
Find a frame that compliments the art, not one that
competes with it. If you are unsure, check with a picture
framing services company for some advice or to have
a frame made to your specifications.
Matching The Surroundings
When framing art you want the design to match the surroundings.
In other words, if your home has more of a modern or
contemporary interior style then you probably should
stay away from frames that have intricate carving, save
those for a more Victorian style of decorating.
The same is true when choosing the mat board; you want
that color and style to guide the viewer’s attention
to the picture itself. Neutral colors are usually your
best bet as they are great for enhancing other colors
in the print or photograph and will easily fit into
the room’s decor.

Why should I use picture frames?
There are two reasons to use a picture frame. The first is
that a picture frame protects the picture or artwork inside the frame from the
outside elements. The second is because often the correctly chosen frame will draw
the attention to the picture or art placed inside the frame.
