Home Theater Projectors Reviews Help You Make Better Decisions

By Nikos L Maxwell

Home theater projectors are a great way to capture that cinematic experience right in the comfort of your own home. Some movies you just need to see "on the big screen," and with all the exciting Blu Ray disc/high-definition technology coming out, you won’t want to miss out.

There are home theater set-ups that cost well over $10,000, but the good news is that prices are dropping and you can get a perfectly fine system for a third of that cost. Let’s take a look at some of the top models and features for 2009 and beyond.

Rating The Top Home Theater Projectors

Consumer Search is a top-caliber review site that combines opinions from numerous experts from consumer groups, newspapers and electronics magazines. Recently, their editors rated some of the top home theater projectors. Topping the list was the Optoma HD65 ($880), a low-cost DLP projector well-suited for standard-definition DVD and television.

The Panasonic PT-AX200U ($1,250) was awarded "Best 720p LCD Projector," noted for its inky black levels and its solid resolution for standard-definition DVDs. Its relative, the Panasonic PT-AE2000U ($2,550), won "Best Value 1080p LCD Projector." Experts say this Panasonic PT combines performance and value, with superb picture quality and the highest available resolution, so it’s ideal for Blu Ray disc movies and high-definition TV.

The Best Luxury Home Theater Projector

A little pricier, the $5,000 Sony Bravia VPL-VW60 was heralded for its top-notch image quality and best black color. The best luxury home theater projector is the JVC DLA-HD100 ($8,000), which delivers the unsurpassed picture quality and shadow details.

Another review site, www.projectorreviews.com, features unbiased write-ups of the best 1080p home theater projectors out this year. The Mitsubishi HC5500 LCD projector was one of the best in the "$2,100 and under" category that can hold its own against other non-ultra-high-contrast video projectors.

Silent Operation And Sharp Images

Its silent operation and sharp image quality make it a good buy. In the $2,100 to $3,500 category, the BenQ W5000 won the "Best in Class award" in the luxury class last year but has since dropped considerably in price. While it’s not in the ultra-high-contrast category, its lens shift placement flexibility, color saturation and film-like quality make this model a favorite.

The Panasonic PT-AE3000 is another top model in the mid-range category, providing unique features like creative frame interpolation, versatile color controls, great black performance and pseudo-anamorphic lens capability. The JVC DLA-RS20 LCoS projector was one of the best in the luxury class ($3,500 to $10,000). Black levels are unsurpassed and color performance is top-notch.

Lens Shift Allows Maximum Flexibility In Home Theater Set-Up

When you’re looking at home theater projectors, you’ll have to also think about the room you’re setting up in. Some people buy their dream projectors only to find they’re unable to mount it close enough to the ceiling to get a good picture. A new feature known as "Lens Shift" allows you maximum flexibility in your home theater set-up so you can place the projector almost anywhere you’d like.

Without lens shift capability, you will need to put your projector at projector screen-top level, directly in the center of the room. All of the 3LCD and LCoS projectors have this lens shift feature if you want it. Avoid DLP projectors, as well as the InFocus projectors and Optoma projectors (except the HD8200) if lens shift is important.

More Projector Facts....

What is a projector?
A projector is a device that takes a signal or an image and causes it to be enlarged or "projected" onto a screening device. Through the use of focused light, anything can be transmitted to a viewer. You are undoubtedly familiar with movie projectors and overhead projectors that teachers often employ in their classrooms to help students but there are many different types of projectors and they have evolved significantly over the years.
