iPhone Development Includes Accepting New Apps
By G L Harris
It’s a question about iPhone development and
Apple’s claim that if people engage in hacking the iPhone,
they will ruin the company’s development efforts. Some
might be tempted to suspect that Apple is crying wolf,
partly because of the end results of hacking efforts
on the iPhones released in 2007.
Those phones were closed, and users had to be satisfied
with whatever programs Apple included. However, someone
developed an iPhone hack for a little program called
"Installer," which allowed people to add third-party
software like games and other utilities. By coincidence,
the iPhone 3G released in 2008 allowed people both to
write and download other applications.
New iPhone Applications Can Be Written And Submitted
For Approval
So hackers might well argue that their efforts, rather
than stifling the development of the iPhone, actually
inspired opening and extending it in a very significant
way. Apple now allows people to code their own iPhone
applications and submit them for approval.
If they meet the company’s criteria, they are placed
in the Apple online store, and people can download the
apps. They can also review and grade them, so others
get some idea of how they perform and whether users
are happy with them.
Apps Can Be Rejected Or Pulled From The Apple Store
However, some iPhone apps get rejected outright, or
are pulled from the App Store even after acceptance.
Many people feel that rejections have been arbitrary,
or acceptance time-consuming.
Developers have complained that getting answers from
Apple about acceptance or rejection is very difficult.
So hacking has kept pace with advances in iPhone development,
as the earlier "Installer" library of hacked
applications itself became a store for buying and downloading
them. It’s now known as Cydia, and its operator, Jay
Freeman, estimates that easily ten percent of iPhone
users have hacked their phones and accessed Cydia’s
apps.
Google Voice Available On Cydia
One reason why so many people justify doing an iPhone
3G unlock is that they are convinced that Apple’s refusal
to allow any but Apple-approved downloads occur solely
because the company is protecting not just its own monopoly,
but that of its American carrier, AT&T.
When protection of so-called "iPhone development"
includes rejecting a major app like Google Voice, hackers
believe there’s something more going on than concern
for the convenience of Apple customers.
The offering of Google Voice on Cydia, and the flocking
of users to that store, may make Apple think twice about
continuing to bite hands that have, so far, fed it quite
well.

More Apple iPhone Facts....
Apple has completely dominated the smartphone market
for the last five years with its revolutionary iPhone.
The iPhone is not just a mobile phone. It is virtually
a computer that you take with you.
You can surf the web, email, text and even play a huge
variety of iPhone applications. There are applications
that can identify songs for you. There are applications
that can teach you a foreign language. There are even
applications that can manage your budget or your caloric
intake for you. If you can think of it, there is an
"app" for it.
