Laptops Displacing Desktops

By Nikos L Maxwell

Are laptops only to be used as a way to document our thoughts and ideas using text and drawings? While some may believe this to be true, others feel that the laptop is quickly becoming the personal computing platform of choice.

At one time they were considered an expensive luxury, yet today they are being used much more often because of the flexibility they offer, with regard to work habits.

This is because more and more people take their work with them and seem to always be on the go. Or, it is also perfect for those who have bulky desktop computers at work but like to do a little work at home as well. The size of the laptop is a huge plus and it gets even smaller with notebooks, yet they still have the power that is required by those who use them.

Laptops May Soon Displace Desktops

Since 2005, the sales and rentals of laptops have actually displaced those of desktops in the United States. Due to a constant drop in pricing, technological improvements and the evolution and extension of the WAN technology, notebooks are destined to replace desktop PCs in most instances, both at home and professionally. As a matter of fact, by 2011, laptop computer sales will account for more than half of the worldwide PC shipments.

According to the Gartner Group, over 258 million personal computers were purchased in 2007 and 60% of those were desktop models. In 2008, the call for the desktop models increased about 7%, while the sales of laptop computers increased by approximately 18.6%. This growth is expected to continue to be in double digits at least through 2010.

Becoming Portable And More Affordable

Some of the reasons for their popularity include the fact that they take up less space than the desktop models, they are portable and becoming are more affordable. While a laptop is still generally more expensive than a desktop, the gap is starting to close in.

In 2002, you may have expected to pay approximately double for a laptop, compared to a PC that went for $1000.00; whereas in 2007, there was approximately a $300 to $500 difference in pricing, depending upon the brand. Of course, power and computers electronics plays a huge part in the deciding factor when choosing the one that will fit your needs the best.

More Processing Power

Many company IT departments have migrated to the use of laptops as well and only the most serious queries are run on servers anymore, which means the power built into most of the newer models should be sufficient.

If you are still unable to decide, then you may want to consider a rental laptop as this will allow you to "test drive" one before making your decision.

More Computer Rental Facts....

Does computer rental come with insurance?
Most rental places do provide insurance factored into the cost of renting the computer. If they do not then you need to seriously reevaluate whether or not to do business with them. You do not need to worry about renting a computer and having it break down and then being forced to pay for a replacement.

If the rental agency wants you to pay extra for insurance, you also may want to reconsider the business arrangement. Insurance should be factored into the weekly or monthly cost for renting the equipment.

If there are no computer rental businesses in your area that factor in insurance into the cost of the monthly rental, and you absolutely must use them, make sure and take out insurance on your own.
