Large Images for Easier Editing of Digital Images
By Nikos L Maxwell
Large images are fantastic for digital photo editing.
You can zero in on the section of the image you like
best and then delete the rest of the image. Simply brilliant
when you don’t have time to zoom in on an image
when using your digital camera.
My digital camera has a fantastic feature. It has a
large memory. As a result, I can take very large pictures,
and this is good when editing images with Photoshop
on my computer.
I can either print them out as large, or you can easily
zoom in on one part of the picture, crop everything
else off, and the picture is still crystal clear, even
though it is a bit smaller.
This has helped in situations where I have had to take
pictures in a hurry and framing and zooming with my
camera has not been an option.

The large pictures my camera can take are indeed very
large. I have it on the middle setting and the pictures
are still 20 by 30 inches in size. This gives me a lot
of room to move, and a lot of room for error too.
Why should you use large images?
I have taken large pictures that were somewhat useless
and zoomed in for a great single shot that I might not
have gotten otherwise. All you need for that is a great
photo editor like Photoshop or the cheaper alternative,
Photoshop Elements and a little patience.
If you want to keep your large pictures as they are,
you may have to find a special place to get them printed
out. Most digital kiosks won’t print anything
higher that an eight by ten photo.
There are places that will print out these large pictures
though, but you may have to go to a specialty shop or
photography store or a professional photo lab to get
it done. In some cases, you may have to mail out your
large pictures on a CD to get them printed, but if you
want them done, it is well worth the effort.
Remember that sharing large pictures online is a bit
tricky. If you want to share with friends you will have
to shrink them down. using compression software
Large images are difficult to use online
Large pictures take a lot of memory, and many people
can’t open them without having huge problems.
Not everyone has a fast, new computer and just one large
photo can take a long time to download and open, especially
if they have dial up service.
Shrink your large pictures down to four by six to share
with friends and they will thank you for it. They may
not look as good to you, but it won’t do
you much good to send out huge files if no one can open
them.
This is true for websites as well, keep your photos
small, and make sure they are standard web resolution
at 72dpi.
Compression of images for faster download
Another alternative is to compress
the images with Winzip for Windows or Stuffit
for Macs, and then email the images and they can be
uncompressed after they are received. Just make sure
the person receiving your images has Winzip or Stuffit
on their computer or provide them with a link to download
the software. They will be thankful for the faster download!
