Learn How To Draw With Regular Practice

By Nikos L Maxwell

There are many people out there who want to learn how to draw, but feel that they lack the natural ability to draw images on paper as they see them in their mind.

Drawing has always been seen as an art form that you are born with the skills to do, and so many people will give up without even trying if they suspect or know that they don’t have those natural abilities.

While having the innate ability to draw is useful for beginners, it is not essential. Like anything else, you can improve and develop the skills and drawing techniques to draw well.

Improving Your Skills With Regular Practice

Naturally, the best way to learn how to draw is through regular practice. Like a sport, a game, or any other activity that requires a degree of skill to be successful, drawing requires a high amount of practice in order for the artist to improve.

No one is born with such a high level of talent that they require no practice at all. You can use the many online drawing lessons on the internet, set yourself tasks as a form of self study, or find a good teacher in your city. Whatever method you choose, it is important that you are drawing every day.

Using The More Artistic Side Of Your Brain

If you want to be able to draw efficiently, then there is another option. You can choose to focus your efforts in maximizing the use of the right side of your brain.

It has long been known that the more logical side of the brain is the left side, generally controlled by the right hand; the more artistic side is the right side, usually controlled by the left hand.

Upside Down Drawing

You can learn to draw by taking into account the way the brain works and doing certain exercises that will maximize the use of the right side. This can include doing things like upside-down drawing, drawing with your eyes closed, and focusing on creating images through negative space.

If your drawing practice encompasses these kinds of techniques, then you will be training your brain to turn off the left side and activate the more artistic right side.

Just Like Learning To Play A Musical Instrument

So by consciously training your brain how to work, you can learn how to draw even if you weren’t born with any natural ability. Many people want to learn art and create images but feel trapped by their lack of skills. You need to think of the ability to draw as being the same as the ability to play a sport or a musical instrument.

With practice, you will improve. You may not become a master but by approaching this skill cleverly and with lots of drawing practice you will certainly do better than you ever thought you could.
