Model Management And The Scams To Avoid

By Judd Walker

Model management is something you need, to become a successful model. As a young model starting out, you can look up reputable modeling agencies and find out as much as you can about each agency.

On the model management website, look at portfolios of current models, clients and some of the projects already completed by the model management agency.

Once you are convinced that these guys are real, look for time and date for open call sessions and then attend on the day. In no time, you will gain experience and you will be told if you have the look.

By doing your careful research you can avoid scams like modeling contests and model schools. These are often modeling agencies that can’t get projects, and are often scam artists. They are after your money and give you nothing in return.

Scam Artists And Crooks

Watch out for scams! This is something everyone on this planet should know about and be wary of. Our world is overflowing with scam artists and crooks. Don’t be surprised if you encounter a few in life. I have encountered several already.

There was the questionable model management organization. Wow, are there ever a lot of fake modeling and talent agencies! There will always be some cheesy individual telling someone they’re a star, and then of course requesting their credit card number. Sound fishy yet?

When I was 19 years old and attending college, I wanted something more. After an acquaintance encouraged me to try my hand at modeling, I did just that.

Decent Modeling Management Service

My first obstacle was finding a decent model management service. Like most areas, there were a few modeling schools/agencies nearby. We had the John Robert Powers and the John Casablanca’s, and maybe a Barbizon or two.

For those of you who’re not privy to the modeling industry, these are the cheesy schools. They’re the model management/talent agencies that don’t really get any work.

No Schooling Needed For Aspiring Models

They earn most of their dough by recruiting more and more students for their schooling program. Something that I must admit is bogus. No aspiring model needs any schooling at all.

It’s basically about taking a few snap shots and heading into real model management agencies for open call. That’s all you need to do. Trust me, they will know if they can use your look or not.

Test Shoot

If they’re interested, they will set you up with a test shoot and so on. I am saying this so that many aspiring models can avoid all the hassles of modeling schools that rip you off, and countless modeling competitions that suck you dry.

To truly try your hand in modeling, you should investigate your area. Check out all the model management agencies in your city. If you’re in a large one like Manhattan, L.A., or Miami, you’re very fortunate.

These are the big boys. Look up all agencies online, find out if they have open call, and then show up to let them give you a once over.

Tips for Attending An Open Call

Here the three tips to potential success. Go in there looking great, but with little or no make-up, pull your hair up, bring a few basic snapshots to show what you look like on camera, and always remember to be very nice!

The main thing is to be ready. If they decide they like your look, then you will be sent for a test shoot. The studio will have their own hair and makeup artists and they will do their magic to their requirements.

Once the test shoot is over, wait for a call from model management.
