Museum Of Fine Arts Showcasing Art From Around The World

By Sylvia Adolvana

Over the years, those well-healed in the arts have compared the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to two very famous and noteworthy museums of Europe: the fabulous Musee d’Orsay, which is located in Paris, and the acclaimed British Museum in the heart of London.

The leaders of the city of Boston, as well as the citizens of Boston and the surrounding area have long been very supportive of the work of the museum and for the arts in general.

In an effort to make sure that this fine repository of the arts remains a leader in the field, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is in the midst of extensive renovations.

Expanding Capacity For More Art Gallery Exhibitions

The east wing of the facility has all but disappeared in the process of the ongoing demolition and ensuing reconstruction. The completion of this expansive grand addition to the museum is highly anticipated and is expected to be dedicated in 2010.

The scope of this major renovation will result in an expanded capacity for many more art gallery exhibitions to be included in the museum facility.

Special Events And Related Exhibits

The administration of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has also been in the process of developing some special events and related exhibits and programs in their art center that will make the visitor experience even more memorable.

While the renovations are in progress, the museum is introducing many new exhibits and displays in areas that are not affected by the construction, to help encourage local area residents to continue patronizing the facility and taking advantage of the current offerings. Visitors to the Boston area are also encouraged to visit the many gallery exhibitions that are still running, even during this time of change and improvement.

Forget The Car And Take The T To The Museum

The museum is easy to access by making use of the city’s  efficient transportation system known as the MBTA, or the "T," as many locals call it. For those arriving by car, there are two museum parking lots available.

One lot is actually a covered garage while the other is an open-air parking lot. Parking is fairly limited and tends to fill up very fast so patrons are encouraged to either take public transportation or carpool whenever possible.

Daily operating hours for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts are as follows: Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 10 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Only select gallery exhibitions and the art gallery housed in the West Wing of the museum are open after 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday.

A Collection Of Art From Around The World

This Boston museum has an extensive collection of fine, exquisite and rare art pieces, which have been collected from many different areas of the world. The Art Gallery of Asia, Africa, and Oceania are very popular with art connoisseurs.

One current art gallery exhibit is the Weng Collection, which highlights Chinese paintings and works of calligraphy. The Art of Europe gallery is an equally extensive collection, which includes over 22,000 pieces of art and covers eras from the seventh century up to the twentieth century, featuring some of the greatest masterpieces of all time.

Permanent Exhibits And Large Gallery Exhibitions

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts have a number of permanent exhibits, such as the Ancient World exhibit, the Art of the Americas gallery, and the massive gallery exhibitions showcasing the Contemporary Art collection. The museum has even integrated such items as textiles, clothing and musical instruments, helping to reveal them as works of art as well.

In order to gain additional information and insights into the various gallery exhibitions, there is also a very effective interactive tour of which visitors can take advantage.

What is the history of museums?
The history of the museum dates back to when ancient Greeks would gather together objects for study and the arts. It is most definitely an ancient practice as people would come together to look at certain pieces or books.

The Alexandrian Library is one example of a famous collection of books that were housed in a museum to protect and allow citizens to come together to view these wonderful scrolls and parchments.

Unfortunately the library was lost and scattered throughout the world but there continued to be more exhibits created to help preserve history’s arts, entertainment and various pieces for future people to enjoy.
