Photo Journalism Is Thrilling And Adventurous

By Philomena Stevenson

If you’re thinking about a career in photo journalism, then you should be aware that in order to be successful, you will need to be a skilled storyteller as well as a professional photographer. This is a career that combines skills that can be difficult to master; photography and writing.

The skills of a journalist can paint a picture and tell the story that can be understood in any culture. This is what is wonderful about photojournalism, as anyone can understand the idea that is being portrayed, for the most part, by simply taking a look at the image or images.

A Good Writer Who Is A Professional Photographer

Photojournalism has also been called news photography. A good writer who is also a professional photographer is able to take news and pictures and put them together to tell complete story. This career has been described as the ability to capture verbs.

Basically, what this means, is that a journalist will primarily look for a news story and then capture the active parts in pictures. This is the reason that photojournalism is able to be understood by the person regardless of what language they speak or word culture they’re from, yet the object is to tell a complete and accurate story in words, and pictures taken with a professional, digital SLR camera.

Words Follow The Pictures

This is not to say that words are not important for journalists. What this means is that the pictures are of first importance and that the words will follow the pictures. If the words are basically there to fill in the blanks, then the pictures are there to describe it.

While this might seem very simple, once it is put into practice it is realized that photo journalism is not as easy as it seems. The difference is what the professional photographer takes pictures of. A photographer takes pictures of nouns, meaning static things, such as people, places and things. A fertile journalist takes pictures of verbs, meaning action. The photojournalist wants to capture the action of the story in pictures, as that is their primary goal.

A Thrilling And Adventurous Job

Once a person has determined that photo journalism is the type of career for them and they have the skills to be successful, then they are well on their way. A successful photojournalist has a thrilling and adventurous job.

Considering they need to be documenting news, this may require travel to various parts of the world. For someone with a sense of adventure, photojournalism is the ideal job.

More Photo Journalism Facts....

Being a photo journalist is more than just a profession. It is a lifestyle. You learn to look at the world as if through the lens of a camera. In fact, photo journalism would not be possible if it were not for the camera. It is the camera that captures the image that you see and allows you to communicate a story just through pictures. This means that if you are interested in becoming a photo journalist, you are going to need a good camera.
