Photography And Career Choices For The New Professional Photographer

By Jane Lovell

Photography is an industry with a wide range of career choices available. Some of your options may include taking images of political events as a photojournalist, photograph models with the latest designer clothes as a fashion photographer, create images to sell products as a commercial photographer, take aerial images as an aerial photographer.

You may even specialise in portrait photography and take images of businessmen, actors, models, weddings and portfolio work.

Editorial Photography

All those photographs in newspapers and magazines are part of editorial photography. This is not limited to photographs of current events but may also include the pictures that accompany many of the features such as those of food, art, fashion and portraits.

Compared to advertising photography, editorial photography has even tighter deadlines if you are working for a newspaper and a much lower budget. On a related note, you may also choose to specialize in fashion photography, which could be for a publication or a company.

Photojournalism - For Capturing Events Of History

For those with a keen interest in international politics and relations, photojournalism may be your best bet. Being part of the leading photojournalism agencies in the world may bring you more prestige, but this may only come after years of experience on the field working freelance.

While this field is quite competitive and rates are not very high, a true passion for photography and capturing moments of life all over the world is a requirement.

Scientific Photography – The Biggest Chance Of Regular Employment

What people don’t know is that the biggest chances for employment are through scientific photography. Compared to other kinds of photography jobs, those taking scientific photographs will have regular salaries and working hours.

The possibilities for this field may entail working for the government in fields as varied as medical, aerial, police and forensic photography. This may also include a lot of documentation and taking photos of artifacts in museums or legal cases. If you do not mind routine work, then you can take scientific photographs for a living.

Fine Art Photography

Fine art photographs are those that are displayed in museums and galleries and sold like paintings and sculptures. It often takes a lot of creativity and experience to be able to enter this field.

If you are really interested in photography, you can also be involved in it by teaching a class in the subject. You can be surrounded by amateurs and hobbyists who are willing to learn and take chances in the field.

Teaching Photography

Teaching does not pay well, but it can supplement your income while you are waiting for a big project to come through. The best option, is to teach a few hours at night and work during the day, so that much time is not taken teaching.

If you are teaching during regular business hours, you are not making the lucrative money you can make if you are working for a good client and you may even miss out on lucrative projects.

Most photographers who teach, only teach a few hours a week, or a few hours a month and often out of business hours. If times are tough and you are not getting new projects, then teaching photography can become a full time career option with a regular income.

Professional Photography

As a professional photographer, you need to be up to date with current trends in the industry, know how to use the latest gadgets, software and marketing. A lot of the professional photography organizations run conferences and short courses for professional photographers to be up to date with the latest in photography.

As a professional photographer you should be a member of a professional photographer organisation so you can meet other photographers in the industry.

You can never stop learning, even from other photographers, as there is always more to know in photography.
