Photography Backdrop To Focus On Main Subject

By Jane Lovell

Photography back drop is essential for portrait and still photographs. You want the main subject in the image to be in sharp focus, without distractions in the background. This is the reason why you often see the back drop slightly out of focus or blurred.

The backdrop can often isolate the main subject, and force you to look at the subject at the subject in the image. You may create a large portrait to be hung on a wall, in the boardroom. You want the viewer to look at the subject in the portrait and not wonder away to other parts of the image. The image will say "Look At Me!" This is easy to do, with a blurry backdrop.

A Photography Back Drop

A photography back drop can make or break a photograph. It is especially critical when you are shooting inside a studio and when you are planning on taking solo or group portraits. It is not always necessary to spend lots of money on a photography back drop since you can easily make one yourself.

Making Your Own Back Drop

First, you will need some muslin fabric for this do it yourself photography back drop. You also need some basic fabric dye in the color that you would like your photography back drop to be. Curtain hangers and banister wood are necessary for hanging the photography back drop but if you have other implements in your home or studio, then they will do just as well.

Applying The Dye To The Fabric

To minimize mess, you can use a black trash bag for dyeing the fabric. You only have to follow the instructions on the fabric dye, but the results are often solid colored photography back drops. If you will manipulate the photograph on digital imaging software afterwards by adding other elements to the background, then keep the photography back drop in one plain color.

If you want something less opaque with more texture, then you have to stir less and let the mixture wait before stirring again. If you are more artistically inclined, then you can also use a canvas backdrop for painting images and designs for a more interesting visual edge to your photographs.

Before you can use your photography back drop, you will need to let it dry completely. If you are not satisfied with the results, you can easily buy other colors of fabric dye and start over.

Buy A Ready Made Back Drop

If you are still convinced that it is less trouble to just buy a photography back drop, there are many websites on the Internet that offer these, mostly with plain backgrounds and others with more scenic designs and colorful patterns. When taking portraits, you want to find a photography back drop that will not clash with the clothing of the person, especially if there are busy prints in the photograph.

If you are taking a portrait, you want to have the backdrop blurred, so that it does not intrude on the main subject of the image, which is the model in the portrait. Depending on the main aim of the portrait. For example, if you want to show a businessman with some of his products then you may include these products as a half focus with the backdrop, but the businessman is in perfect focus.

There are a number of reasons you want to use a backdrop. One is to provide a blur to the background and avoid any distraction from the main subject in the image. This is the reason, the best photographs, use a backdrop as a blurry background.

Manipulate The Back Drop On Your Computer

If you are not satisfied with the photography backdrop, you can always manipulate the back drop on your computer with image editing software. Depending on your requirements, you can blur it, add texture, make it opaque, change the colours to differentiate from the main subject.

You may have a deadline to meet and you do not have the time to wait for that fantastic fabric you have ordered. You can take the image with a bland fabric, as long as it does not clash with main subject, then manipulate the back drop on your computer and you will be able to make your deadline.

Then you may cancel the order for that expensive fabric for the back drop and save on your costs!
