Photography Industry Shack Guide
Photography Industry Overtaken By Digital Photography
By Jane Lovell
Digital photography has completely changed the marketplace
for photography, and has dismantled or destroyed parts
of the photography industry. Although digital photography
has only taken over film photography in less than a
decade, the consequences are overwhelming.
You can still purchase film for your film camera, but
the range of film available is severely limited. Kodak
and Fuji were major players in the popularization of
digital photography but they were also once major players
in photo film development for the photography
industry.
From the beginning of digital photography, it was obvious
for all to see. There would be a reduced need to print
pictures. If there is a need to print digital images,
more often these images are printed on a home printer.
The result, is the reduced demand for photo labs, while
the demand for photo printers has increased. Manufacturers
of these printers like Canon and HP, were extremely
pleased with the demand.
A Wide Range Of Electronic Companies Now Manufacture
Digital Cameras
Quality camera manufacturers consisted of a few companies
including Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Pentax. Digital
photography has allowed electronic companies like Sony,
Panasonic and Casio, to become top sellers of quality
digital cameras. On the other hand, companies like Minolta,
have either been taken over or shut the doors.
Digital photography has replaced instant cameras like
Polaroid cameras. Where there was once a professional
line of instant cameras, these have now been replaced
by digital cameras. Digital photography now meets the
need for instant feedback, without the cost of Polaroid
instant film. If you search hard, you can still find
instant film, but you will really need to find that
needle in a haystack of digital cameras.
Demand For Film Has Almost Disappeared
Once digital cameras began to outsell film cameras,
Kodak began to close down factories. Together with Fuji,
they found themselves facing a much lower demand for
many higher end films and recently, Kodak announced
an end to the production of the much loved Kodachrome
slide film. Some of the old photography masters, must
be spinning in their graves.
Changes In Services Supplied By Professional Photographers
In the recent past, a professional photographer would
be hired for an event and would charge for their time
and prints, but kept the negatives so they could charge
for more prints. People would go back to the photographer
when they needed more prints.
These days, professional photographers cannot get away
with this, and many of them hand over original photos
on a CD. The consumer has demanded immediate satisfaction
and this has been met by the revolution in the photography
industry.

More Photography Facts....
Photography is a growing business. Thanks to modern technology
making photography easier through digital cameras. Breaking
into the photography field can be more than just a hobby.
It can be a full-time occupation with very rewarding
results.
Weddings, senior pictures and baby pictures are always
in demand and for consumers, more photographers means
a wider range to choose from.
It is not just portraits of blushing brides or smiling
babies either. Photojournalism and stock photographs
are in high demand as well.
Do not let life just pass you by if you find yourself
in a dead end job that you hate. Photography is a career
field that is always in need of new lenses and a fresh
eye for capturing those special moments or unique shots.
As demand increases, so too does the need for photographers.
It can be a part-time job or can be turned into a career
that you love.
If given the choice, most people would prefer to have
an occupation that they love. If you think back to childhood,
you can remember the all important question "What
do you want to be when you grow up?"
Unfortunately many individuals find themselves in careers
that are less than desirable and far from what they
always wanted to do. If you always wanted to try photography
when you were younger, take heart and know that it is
not an impossibility.
