Picture Books Help Showcase Significant Family Events

By Sylvia Adolvana

Picture books can include images and captions from significant family events. It may be images from your wedding, the birth of your children, first day at school, college graduation. All these images can be placed in a picture book, with captions to highlight milestones reached over the years.

When friends come to visit you and want to know facts about your family, you can show them your picture books with all the significant family events. Creating a picture book is like creating a scrapbook. You can buy the layout pages and embellishments from hobby stores or buy online from scrapbooking sites.

Like To Look At Picture Books

I hate to admit it, but books with pictures have always been my favorite. I try to pretend that I’m a big fan of serious literature, and sometimes I am, but mostly I just like to look at picture books. When I was a kid, of course, I loved children’s picture books as all children do.

I loved being read to, I loved getting to cuddle with my mom as she recited the story that I knew so well today, but most of all I loved looking at the beautiful images and imagining that I was there. I loved coloring book pictures, and I loved decorating them. As a matter of fact, I was so into those coloring picture books that my mom would often Xerox one for me so that I could draw and color the same image over and over again.

A Scrapbook Is A Picture Book

Later in high school, I got into scrapbooks. In some ways, a scrapbook is a diary, but it is also a picture book. You see, I wasn’t so much into looking at simple books of images – if I was in that mood, I would go to an art gallery.

The thing about picture books for me was the combination of images and text. That is what made them all so compelling to me. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that was what was behind the fascination I developed with photography while in college.

Custom Photo Books

I loved having my photography in galleries, of course, and at first I thought I would be a serious writer. What I didn’t understand was that my favorite format was custom photo books. I loved creating books of family photos, particularly if I could have my own captions with them.

Instead of arranging my photography assignments in artistic displays, I would put them in leather photo albums, conventionally arranged. It would irritate my teacher, and my peers would scoff, but my friends all thought it was wonderful. I had beautiful pictures and beautiful picture books! What more could you want?

Nowadays, I have moved into the digital age. I love to make coffee table photo books using all of the latest technology. Although I have changed a lot from my original scrap booking days when I eschewed digital technology, in some ways I am still true to my roots. After all, it has always been about the picture books above all else.

Tips And Ideas From Scrapbooking Sites

If you want to create your first picture book and are looking for tips and ideas, you can visit sites that give you tips on scrapbooking. Some of these sites are membership sites where you can exchange ideas with other like minded members. Some also sell materials to make scrapbooks, like scrapbooking pages, layouts and ideas for captions.

You may even look at digital scrapbooks online, to get ideas on how to create your own picture books. Instead of looking at blank pages, when embarking to create your first picture book, you can look at what other people have done, and use the better ideas to create your own scrapbook.

You may think about creating a picture book to showcase the life of your family. You may look at including images from your wedding, birth of your children and other family events and milestones reached over the years.

You can show your creations to friends and family, to marvel at your beautiful picture books.
