Product Photography For Simple And Direct Images

By Cedric B Georges

Product photography is a popular career choice for many photographers, especially those who like taking photographs for catalogs, fliers and other advertising media. If you have a good grounding in photography, you may know the quality of photos needed to please the client.

Alternatively, if you are looking to find out what is needed to become a product photographer, you can look through product catalogs and see the standard of photos needed in order for you to create quality photos of products. The photos you create could be placed on websites and stock agencies, in order for you to start earning an income and developing a name in the industry.

Placing Your Portfolio Online

You may even look at creating a website, with some of your portfolio images online, to entice more potential clients to talk to you about creating images for their next marketing project.

Once you have a number of clients, you may develop a leading name in product photography.

Using Your Skills To Develop A Career

If you love to take photographs and are good at it, you may want to see what you can do to earn some money with your skills. Some people go to school to learn all about cameras, what they can do, and how to make the most of them.

Others just come by this on their own and are very good at it. Whatever the case with you, you should think about putting your skills to some use. If you want some extra money for Christmas or bills, or just want to start a new career there are many things you can do. Product photography is just one of those things.

Taking Pictures Of Products

You know people are needed to take pictures of models for catalogs and magazines, in portrait studios, and as reporters working for newspapers and Internet publications. However, did you know there are those in product photography out there that take pictures of things rather than people?

This job is not quite as glamorous as taking pictures of models for publications like Vogue, but it can be a satisfying and rewarding career move. Product photographers are always needed as long as you live in the right market.

Photos On Fliers, Menus, Magazines And Other Advertising

When you get your mail each week, you see the work of someone who works in product photography. These people take pictures for sales fliers for all companies that give out fliers advertising their weekly sales.

You see their work in brochures and fliers for other things as well. When you see a picture of food on a menu in a fast food restaurant, those have been taken by product photographers as well.

Their work is everywhere but you do not hear much about this type of career. You see it all of the time but you may not think much about who took the photos.

Working Well WIth Light And Small Items

In order to excel in product photography, you must work well with light and small items that means exact focus and little room for creativity in some cases. Some work may be more creative but other times it is very straight forward and too the point.

It depends on what work you can find. High end establishments tend to want more artsy shots while stores that appeal to the masses what simple and direct. The lighting must be exact and the products must be displayed in a positive and appealing way. Those working in product photography learn how to do this and they do it well.

Finding Work Online And Advertising Agencies

You can start your search for jobs in product photography online or at your local talent agency. Don’t start out until you are pretty sure you know what you are doing and that you can work well in all types of situations. The best thing about training to be in product photography is that you can do a lot of practice and prep work in your own home.

Get a good portfolio of shots together and then see what you can find. If you look long enough, you’ll find something to get your foot into the door. If you do well, you may find people are searching you out.

Your Own Product Photos In Your Portfolio

To develop an understanding of the work required, you should look at catalogues, fliers, magazines, advertising and almost anything with product photos. To start off, you can attempt to create you own product catalogues by taking images of products to display on an imaginary catalogue. You can refer to the work of other photographers and see if you can meet the same standard of work.

A good way to start a career, is as an assistant to a professional product photographer. There is always a demand for assistants, and most professional photographers, started as an assistant.

Developing Your Reputation As A Product Photographer

Once you create your portfolio of product photos, then you should make a few calls to photography studios and see if there is a need for a new assistant for product and commercial photography. Always keep your eyes open for assistant jobs in classifieds in newspapers and online classifieds.

Getting a foothold in the industry is quite tough, but once you begin your work as an assistant and you continue to include more images in your portfolio, you may develop a solid reputation of producing quality work and be in demand for product photography.
