Subliminal Message Stimulates The Mind

By Sylvia Adolvana

In advertisements, it is very difficult to spot a subliminal message. These types of messages are being expressed below the threshold of the conscious mind and are registered at the subconscious level. Good, bad and even neutral messages can be carried in this fashion.

Typically, subliminal advertisements are shown between movies. The mind is being shifted to another conscious level when seeing these types of commercials. A sudden stimulus can occur and be recognized in the subconscious mind much later.

They condition without the viewers being aware that their thinking is being modified. This unnoticed stimulus motivates people silently to purchase the advertised products. The messages are camouflaged within the advertisements.

Below The Threshold Of Normal Consciousness

The most common form of a subliminal message is generally undertaken with spoken commands that are used to stimulate the mind on a subconscious level. The prefix "sub" is Latin and means anything that is underneath or below.

An example of this would be sub-zero - because it is below zero degrees. The word "liminal" is taken from the Latin word limen. Limen means threshold and it is used in this case to represent the threshold between two states of consciousness. Therefore the word subliminal means below the threshold of normal consciousness.

Admitted Falsified Findings

In 1959, a man named James Vicary carried out a study where messages were flashed across a movie screen. His claim that flashing the words "drink coke" and "eat popcorn" caused sales of the two products to raise significantly among the movie goers.

His results were never duplicated by any other researchers and in fact, in his later years, Vicary admitted that he falsified his findings.

Banned From TV And Radio

However true or untrue his findings turned out to be, the damage was already done. Subliminal advertising had become exposed to the public psyche, and people were shocked at how easily the subconscious mind could be manipulated. Sublimated messages were later banned from television and radio by several countries and even investigated by the CIA.

Although his experiment was a fraud, Vicary spurred modern researchers to investigate this phenomenon of mind programming. Using the latest technologies, they have shown that these hidden messages can indeed influence subconscious thinking.

Subliminal Mp3 and CD

In the field of personal development and self-help, a subliminal message can be used in a wide range of ways. Many people believe in their effectiveness and there are tons of examples of how people have changed their lives through the use of audio recordings, such as with a subliminal MP3 or CD.

This has not been proven, nor has it been disproved, however. Whether sublimated messages have an affect on our buying decisions is still controversial. We will just have to wait for more research on the subject from the scientific community to get a better understanding of what happens when humans are exposed to a subliminal message in advertising.

More Subliminal Facts....

Have subliminals been used effectively in hard rock music?
Courtesy of James Vicary’s experiment many religious groups began to think that subliminals were used during backmasking of songs. Backmasking is a technique where a sound is recorded backwards into a song and the brain processes it even though the words sound like gibberish when listened to.

Many religious organizations claimed that heavy metal or hard rock music bands were using this subliminal trick to influence kids to party and even worship the devil. However it has never been proven to be true.

Most of the bands that were targets laughed it off or even used it to their advantage to sell more records. So perhaps it was effective but not in the way that the religious and moral leaders thought.
