The Concept Leading To Product Creation
By Sylvia Adolvana
An idea for a product starts with the concept of what
it should look like. This is true whether a company
is producing a widget, a small kitchen appliance, an
automobile, or an airplane.
Yet, the conceptualization and design of the product
have to start with one very specific tool that will
measure the design process from beginning to end. This
tool is a working prototype.
This is especially true if the product will be massed
produced. The reason for this, is that the prototype
will be the standard that the production process is
measured by.
Creating Efficient Products
The new concept a company wishes to pursue must undergo
this stage of the design process before production can
begin on the product. During this era of mass production,
producers are still focusing on the efficiency of their
products.
Producers and manufacturers alike, understand the necessity
of using a prototype system. There are basically two
aspects or conditions where these working prototypes
become important.
The Type Of Prototype Required
Will the prototype focus on the quality, efficiency,
durability etc. of the product? Or does the producer
want to review their options and design their prototype
as an example to present to the customer? From these
questions, the answers on what type of prototype will
be necessary are found.
The concept that a new product is derived from will
undergo many changes before it will be refined to a
standard that is acceptable for production. The effort
that designers and engineers will have to exert will
be easier if they have a good system of prototype development.
Avoiding The Consequences Of Bad Product Releases
This means too that with the use of a prototype, the
chances of financial loss from future product issues
will be avoided without too much extra effort on the
part of those involved in the production of the product.
The producer’s potential for earning a profit and gains
will be significantly improved.
The use of a tool like a working, new prototype will
be helpful for the realization of the concept, by which
any new product is developed. This part of the design
process is something that every product should have
to undergo.
Meeting Success By Avoiding Shortcuts
The advantage of this is the benefits provided when
using a prototype when developing the product. It is
a necessary evil and there is no short cutting if it
is to be successful.
The biggest value that a prototyping development system
will bring to the production of the new product is the
ability to foresee future problems or safety issues
in the design.

More Prototype Facts....
Who tests prototypes?
The first people to test prototypes
are the engineers and designers. After this most designers
will turn the prototypes over to testing groups that
will put the model through a series of tests to determine
functionality, overall design, efficiency and ease of
use.
The testers take detailed notes
so that the engineers and designers can review the tests
and determine what steps to take in order to improve
the design. It can often take many different testing
runs to arrive at the finished product.
Typically these prototypes are
labeled with the Greek numbering system. The initial
model is called the Alpha. Once problems are detailed
a Beta version will be created that solves the initial
problems. This cycle continues until the finished product
is developed.
