Web Cameras For Online Video Communication

By Richard Harrison

Web cameras are popular when used for online video communication between friends and family members. You may have a friend who is overseas and you want to chat online using video, you can use a web camera to view them and chat online.

Web cameras are also used for conferencing and video blogging. A lot of the web cameras come now as part of the computer, when you buy a new computer or a laptop. You can use your web camera to talk to your colleagues at work or your friends who may be at a social occasion you were not able to attend. They can use the web camera to show you what you are missing.

Do you remember when the first web cameras came out? I remember that it was a novelty, and that I could not believe that you could put a small camera in your home and you could broadcast whatever you wanted to anyone who was willing to watch.

Some have even used web cameras to make money online, though some of these methods are highly questionable at best.

Web cameras with a new computer

Some newer computers come with web cameras installed. When I bought my laptop I saw that the model I got came with a camera if you wanted one. These web cameras were located above the monitor.

Videoblogging

I know people like to have web cameras for video blogs and the like, but I am not one of these people. There is something scary to me about someone being able to watch me in my home, though I do know I would have to give permission for them to do so.

If you love the idea of web cameras, you don’t necessarily need to get one that is built into your computer. You can get a free standing model that is quite inexpensive, and you can find them almost anywhere you shop for computer accessories.

Your digital camera as a web camera

You can also use your digital camera as a web camera. Though not all digitals will double as web cameras, many of them do. You will have to figure out how to hook it up to your computer, but it should work just like the ones you can buy in the store, and perhaps even better. Read the manual to find out how to connect your digital camera to your computer.

Though web cameras are a neat idea, they might be something you don’t want your children to use. There is nothing wrong with them using a web camera to talk to friends or family on the Internet, but you never know who may find them online.

Precautions should be taken to protect family and children

Sadly, there are a lot of sick people out there who look online just for children who may be using web cameras. These people target lonely children and can sometimes get them to do scary things with their cameras. Keep a close eye on what is going on.

As a precaution, only connect your web camera to your computer when you are there with your children, otherwise store it away and take it out when needed.

There are so many stories of predators online that you don’t want your children to be their next victim.

If precautions are taken, then web cameras can be used safely in the family environment to view and chat to your friends and relatives who may be interstate or overseas.
